There's Messi vs Ronaldo, Federer vs Nadal, Coke vs Pepsi, AD vs CD, but what's the rival of MAL?

The criteria/factors that determine the rivalry is up to you to decide by the way.

AniList perhaps? It came to my mind first. Personally I use it as a backup account.

Anime News Network, I guess. Anilist is more of an obvious choice since it's similar, but ANN seems more down to earth and 'professional.' IDK if it's actually popular or great, but I heard good things about it from ProZD.
ow + nw = 90-2000s

In terms of function obviously Anilist.

In terms of community, there really isn't a rival or opposing community. Instead you get a few individual rivals who troll or harass the site. Genshin, ishinashi, and of course, the fucking Yhwach of MAL, SSJMaster who ruined IMG tag for a year, hacked the site countless times, and most likely caused the MALpocalypse (long time site shutdown). Damn, most of you weren't even around for that shit lol.

None.
AniDB
Never used it, but by the looks of it, it looks outdated and dead.
Anikore
Never heard of it, probably because there's a language barrier.
AniList
A website that looks like it was made in google sides ran by the "politically correct" types that ban you if they disagree with you.
Anime-Planet
Dead unmoderated forum full of botspam.
Anime News Network
Looks to be more of a news website than an actual hangout site, obviously.
Kitsu
I thought about checking it out but one of the top forum posts was just about how bad it is.

@Shishio-kun Ah yeah, SSJMaster. I don't know him, but I do remember seeing that name a few times before and people having really strong opinions about him lol. MALpocalypse is something I've heard about a few times as well. I think I'll look into these two though, just out of curiosity.

Honestly I would probably give that honor to Anime Planet since it's been around almost as long as MAL has back in the day. Though I guess these days that honor would go to Anilist since it's the biggest of the bunch.

Probably AniList in terms of function but their community doesnt seem as active unfortunately. I have a backu pof my list over there but i don't talk much on the forums as they are more quiet than the ones here even if the vibes as much more chill.
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place.

I haven't used any other anime-listing sites besides Anilist. I'd say it's a good competitor to MAL. The social media aspect of it is more modern and you can have unlimited favorites in anime, manga, and characters without having to pay anything for it. Plus, it offers a selection of rating systems rather than having to use just one. Which can be appealing to people who have different ways of rating.

Pretty much none. Very different discussion culture from others and very different way of running the online services.

When the site was down for months in 2018, I called it the great MALfunction. Ha. As I understand it, it was because they discovered a security vulnerability in the site's code and were being cautious while they fixed it.
